Cyprus Enters the AI Era: National Taskforce Launched to Lead AI Development and Implementation

On 22/01/2025, the Council of Ministers of Cyprus approved the establishment of a National Specialised Committee on Artificial Intelligence, commonly referred to as the AI Taskforce.

This initiative underscores Cyprus's commitment to proactively addressing the challenges and harnessing the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence technologies.

Role and Objectives of the AI Taskforce

The AI Taskforce is designed to serve as an advisory body to the government, focusing on the development, integration, and implementation of AI across various sectors in Cyprus. Its primary objectives include:

  • Enhancing the national economy
  • Bolstering competitiveness
  • Improving the quality of life for citizens

In addition, the taskforce will play a crucial role in:

  • Formulating a national AI strategy
  • Identifying AI opportunities across public and private sectors
  • Fostering innovation and research within Cyprus
  • Monitoring global AI trends and developments

Leadership and Expert Panel

The AI Taskforce will be chaired by the Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation, and Technology and will consist of eleven members appointed by the Council of Ministers for a five-year term.

Alignment with EU AI Regulations

In alignment with the European Union's Artificial Intelligence Act, which seeks to ensure the safe and ethical development and use of AI systems, Cyprus has also approved a national governance framework to oversee the implementation of AI regulations. Under this framework:

  • The Communications Commissioner has been designated as the Notifying and Market Surveillance Authority
  • This role includes overseeing AI-related matters and ensuring compliance with EU regulations
