Economou & Co Contributes in Chambers Enforcement of Judgments 2026

  • 07 Aug 2026

Economou & Co LLC has authored the Cyprus Trends and Developments chapter of the Chambers and Partners Enforcement of Judgments 2026 guide, one of the most widely consulted international references on the recognition and enforcement of judgments and awards across jurisdictions.

The chapter was prepared by the firm's dispute resolution team, Ioannis Economou, Eleftherios Economou, Michalis Zivanaris and Elli Economou, and marks the firm's return as the contributor of the Cyprus chapter for a third consecutive edition.

The firm's contribution maps the Cyprus enforcement regime in full, from the combination of EU regulations, bilateral treaties and domestic legislation that governs recognition, through to the execution methods available once a judgment or award has been registered.

The chapter maps the full Cyprus enforcement regime, covering:

  • EU judgments under Regulation (EU) No 1215/2012, and Cyprus's network of bilateral treaties with non-EU states;
  • UK judgments after Brexit under the Foreign Judgments (Reciprocal Enforcement) Law, Cap 10;
  • the conditions, procedures and defences that govern recognition and enforcement;
  • the enforcement of domestic judgments and of arbitral awards under the New York Convention and the International Commercial Arbitration Law of 1987; and
  • the interim relief that protects recovery, from freezing and Chabra injunctions to Norwich Pharmacal and gagging orders.

It also examines the impact of the Hague Convention on Recognition and Enforcement of Judgments, now in force and recently ratified by the United Kingdom, on the predictability of cross-border enforcement.

The full chapter is available on the Chambers website: Enforcement of Judgments 2026 – Cyprus.
