Economou & Co LLC Contributes to World Justice Project's 2024 Rule of Law Index

Economou & Co LLC is proud to have contributed to the World Justice Project's (WJP) Rule of Law Index 2024. Ioannis Economou and Eleftherios Economou contributed as experts on behalf of Cyprus for this year’s index.

Key Highlights of the Index:

  1. Absence of Corruption in the Judicial Branch:
    • This factor evaluates whether judges and judicial officials avoid soliciting or accepting bribes and whether they perform their duties without personal enrichment. It also measures if the judiciary operates free from undue influence by the government, private interests, or criminal organizations, ensuring that judicial rulings remain fair and impartial.
    • WJP 2024 Score: The score for the absence of corruption in the judicial branch in Cyprus is 0.83, notably higher than the global average of 0.61.

  2. Justice is Free from Improper Government Influence:
    • The Cypriot judiciary is distinguished by its strong insulation from undue government interference. This independence is crucial for ensuring impartial rulings and fostering public confidence in the system.
    • WJP 2024 Score: Civil justice is free of improper government influence scored 0.75 (global average 0.51)

  3. Adherence to Due Process:
    • Cyprus upholds due process as a fundamental aspect of its legal proceedings, ensuring that the rights of the accused are respected and safeguarded. This includes access to competent legal assistance, the presumption of innocence, and the right to challenge evidence. Such adherence positions Cyprus favourably in promoting fairness within its criminal justice system.
    • WJP 2024 Score: The protection of due process and the rights of the accused received 0.70 (global average 0.51).
