Economou & Co LLC Delivers GDPR Training at CY-ESM Public Health Workshop
On 13 May 2026, Economou & Co LLC contributed to the CY-ESM training programme on epidemiology and surveillance, delivering two dedicated sessions on data protection law to public servants of the Cyprus Ministry of Health. The workshop was hosted at the Shakolas Educational Center for Clinical Medicine of the University of Cyprus Medical School, and forms part of a broader capacity-building initiative under the EU-funded CY-ESM project.
Dr. Michalis Zivanaris, of Economou & Co LLC, led both sessions. The first provided a structured introduction to the General Data Protection Regulation, covering the foundational principles of lawful processing, the particular legal framework applicable to health data, the roles and responsibilities of data controllers and processors, and the obligations that attach when processing is carried out for public health purposes. The second session took a practical turn, engaging participants in the analysis of real-world scenarios drawn from the operational context of epidemiological surveillance, contact tracing, and data breach management.
The sessions were attended by public health professionals as part of the CY-ESM programme, an EU-funded initiative coordinated by the University of Cyprus that seeks to strengthen the institutional and technical capacity of Cyprus's public health infrastructure.
Economou & Co LLC has developed substantial expertise in data protection law, advising on GDPR compliance, data governance frameworks, and the specific legal obligations applicable to the processing of sensitive personal data.
